WAYNESBORO - Reeves Construction Company is pushing toward completion on the State Route (SR) 56 widening project in Burke County.

The following activities, weather permitting, are planned in the project area. Some construction scenarios and locations may cause the contractor to creep past the end time mentioned below in regards to being totally out of the road.

Monday, March 18 traffic will shift from the current outside lanes in both directions to the inside

lanes to allow more asphalt topping finalization.

Thursday, March 21 crews will work on the River Road tie-in area from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Friday, March 22 teams move to complete side road sections on Collins Road and SR 23 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Project management listened to the concerns expressed with major traffic impacts into the evening hours earlier this week. All parties are working together to mitigate the delays for the traveling public.

If weather allows this schedule to hold, major items to remain into April include grading of shoulders, final striping and the full-activation of the signalized intersection at SR 56 and River Road.

This project includes widening existing SR 56 from variable rural two and three lanes to four lanes with a flush median and rural shoulders from the Burke/Richmond County line to the intersection with SR 23. Official completion

is July 2019.

Improvements are funded by the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) Referendum passed by Georgia voters in the Central Savannah River Area. The aforementioned widening and reconstruction is Phase I of three total planned TIA projects to remake SR 56 in Burke County.
