Hwy 56 North Closed for Two Weeks Beginning February 5th

Posted: Jan 31, 2018

WAYNESBORO- A section of State Route (SR) 56, northeast of

Waynesboro, will close from Feb. 5 to Feb. 19, 2018 to allow contractors to

replace damaged drainage structures between Collins Road and River Road.

During the allowed 14-day closure window, drivers may use the prepared detour

via SR 56 SPUR/River Road, SR 80 and SR 23. Local traffic will be allowed up to

a certain point.

The work is part of the $4.817 million construction award for Phase I widening

of SR 56 to a four-lane highway and is funded entirely by the Transportation

Investment Act.

The 1.35-mile widening is expected to reduce the crash rates, while improving

capacity. In totality all three phases of eventual Burke County roadway

expansion equates to a $24 million investment.
