    As weather allows, Reeves Construction Company will open all four lanes on the newly rebuilt Hwy 56 from the Burke/Richmond County line to the intersection with Hwy 23 Thursday, July 18. The key activity is full "stop and go" activation of the new traffic signal at River Road/Hwy 56 SPUR. Please be aware of the major change in operations. Advanced alert flashers/signal were added to each appoach on Hwy 56 for safety of the traveling public. Improvements are funded by the Georgia Transportation Investment Act - TIA. The aforementioned widening and reconstruction is Phase I of three total planned TIA projects to remake SR 56 in Burke County.

    Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with O.C.G.A. 21-2-540, a special election shall be held in Burke County to fill the vacancy in the office of County Commissioner District 4, caused by resignation of the Honorable Allen Delaigle. The special election will be held on September 17, 2019. Qualifying for the special election shall be held at the Burke County Courthouse, Board of Elections and Registration Office at 602 N. Liberty Street Rm 104, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on July 24, 2019 and ending at 12:00 noon on July 26, 2019. The qualifying fee shall be $180.00. All persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to register to vote in the special election for County Commission District 4 may register to vote through the close of business on August 19, 2019. Early voting will begin August 26, 2019 through September 13, 2019, at the Burke County Board of Elections Office from 9: a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on election day. The only the polls for district 4 will be open, they are Alexander, Girard, Sardis and Telfair. Should a runoff election be required, such runoff will be held on October 15, 2019.   • New Signal Turning On at Hwy 56 and River Road

    WAYNESBORO - Drivers will notice

    major changes on State Route (SR) 56 at River Road starting this week. The
    signalized intersection will go into flash mode Thursday and then full
    operations one week later.

    The signal turn on will coincide with the opening of all four lanes on the
    widening and reconstruction project from the Burke/Richmond County line to SR

    Weather permitting, motorists can expect the following schedule in Burke

    • Flash mode operation (Yellow on

      SR 56 – Red on River Road/SR 56 SPUR) July 11 at 10 a.m. 

    • Full "stop and go"

      operation July 18 by 10 a.m.

    • The construction barrels will

      remain in place on SR 56 and River Road until the day of full signal


    Message boards are already set up on all three

    intersection approaches with the dates and times listed above.

  • Innovative event provides training for military members, medical services for Georgia communities

    WAYNESBORO, GA – Military members wrapped up the East Central Georgia Innovative Readiness Training event here June 23. The 12-day event provided service members with valuable training while providing local residents with more than $1.3 million in free medical services.
    “Working with the members of the community has been awesome,” said Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Aly Eisenhardt, the officer in charge of ECG IRT 2019. “It’s been successful for us and we received the training we needed.
    “If I was to measure success on the mission it would be through patient care, readiness and training. Additional measures include community engagement and the cost savings for community residents with no-cost patient care.”
    From June 15 to 22, military members provided medical services at no cost to community residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Many residents arrived in the early hours of the day to receive medical care. Dental services filled up quickly each day and remained in high demand throughout the week.

    WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt announced today that more than 1,900 local governments around the country will receive $514.7 million in Payments in Lieu“Payments in lieu of taxes are made to local governments to help offset their inability of Taxes (PILT) funding for 2019. For fiscal year 2019, Georgia will receive $2,818,370 and Burke County will receive $22,270.
